After my divorce, I bought a house and told no one. While I was out of state, my cameras showed a moving truck in my driveway. Then I saw my ex-husband and his new wife carrying their furniture inside. I didn’t call him. I called the police. My steaming mug of black coffee suspended halfway to my mouth, my entire body petrifying as my phone screen illuminated: 10:14 AM on a Saturday, Person detected in driveway. For five disorienting seconds, my brain desperately attempted to rationalize the impossible. I must be looking at the wrong camera feed. This had to be a technical glitch. But it wasn’t. A massive yellow Penske moving truck was backing into the driveway of the brick house in Ohio that I had purchased entirely on my own just eleven days prior. Then, the true psychological horror detonated. Mark didn’t break in. He walked straight to the smart deadbolt keypad and punched in four digits with practiced rhythm. A tiny green light flashed. Click. The door swung open. He knew my code! Trembling so violently that scalding coffee splashed over my knuckles, I dialed the local police dispatcher, my voice cracking in disbelief: “My ex-husband and his new wife are currently moving furniture into a house I legally own! I am four hours away in Kentucky, and neither has authorization to be on the premises!” The dispatcher typed rapidly, then asked a question that froze the marrow in my bones: “Ma’am, are you absolutely certain no one gave him permission? How did he acquire your address and access code?” Staring at the screen, a suffocating, icy dread tightened around my throat. I had never given him the address. I had only shared that closing information with one person… And in that second, the moving truck wasn’t the part of this nightmare that terrified me most… As Facebook doesn’t allow us to write more, you can read more under the comment section.
